Policy JLCE
First Aid and Emergency Medical Care
School Board Approved: March 21, 2016

School personnel have the following direct responsibilities regarding accidents occurring in school during the school day and at school sponsored events: administering first aid, summoning medical assistance, notifying administration, notifying parents, filing accident/incident reports.

The Superintendent shall ensure that at least one other person on staff, other than the school nurse, is certified in first aid and cardiopulmonary certification (CPR). If the school nurse is not available, the person(s) who have current first aid, CPR certification, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training is authorized to administer first aid, CPR, and AED as needed.

At the start of each school year each school will obtain emergency contact information from parents/guardians for each student and for each staff member.

The school nurse or specially trained staff members have the authority to administer care in case of a medical emergency. This authorization extends to administering oxygen, epinephrine, or an opioid antagonist without prior notification to parents or guardians.
