Homework
School Board Approved: June 18, 2018

Work outside of the classroom can be broken into two categories: formative assessment (homework) and summative assessment.

Homework is a constructive tool in the teaching/learning process when geared to the needs and abilities of students. Purposeful assignments not only enhance student achievement, but also develop self-discipline and associated good working habits. As an extension of the classroom, homework must be planned and organized, must be viewed as purposeful to the students, and should be assessed and returned to students in a timely manner with descriptive, specific feedback. Teachers may give homework to students to aid in the student’s educational development. Homework should be an application of classroom experience, and should not be assigned for disciplinary purposes.

Teachers shall carefully explain to their students how homework assignments are related to the learning process and failure to perform them will result in appropriate consequences. Homework is formative assessment and should not be embedded in the academic achievement reporting process.

Summative assessments are for the purpose of evaluating student learning. Summative assessments are done within the school setting; however, portions of these assessments may require work outside of the classroom (i.e. lab report, term paper, etc.).
